Chiropractic treatment benefits
Chiropractic adjustments can help alleviate pain and stiffness in the spine and surrounding muscles.
Chiropractic care can help correct spinal alignments issues and promote better posture.
Chiropractic adjustments can increase range of motion and reduce stiffness in joints.
Chiropractic care has been shown to reduce the frequency of severity of headaches and migraines.
Chiropractic manipulation assists in firing up the nervous system which therefore helps boost the bodies immune function.
Chiropractic care can help promote relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety.
Chiropractic care can enhance flexibility, balance and overall physical performance.
Chiropractic care can assist with alleviating back pain and discomfort associated with pregnancy.
Chiropractic care can encourage better sleep quality and duration.
Chiropractic care for these conditions can help to increase both blood and cerebrospinal fluid which, in turn, delivers more oxygen to and removes waste from the skull, allowing the brain to have an increased ability to heal and function properly.
Many infant issues may be directly related to problems with the spine or the nervous system that may be corrected with spinal chiropractic care. Chiropractors can assist your baby with the following:
- Paediatric – Colic, Reflux, Breastfeeding, Chronic infections, Sleep patterns, Allergies
- Prenatal – Reduce morning sickness, pregnancy back pain, reduce labor and delivery time, prevent breech presentation of baby
Chiropractic care is non-invasive and doesn’t involve your child taking any medication and is, therefore, a safe option to gain more insight and weigh different treatment options.
Chiropractic care focuses on treating the whole person and not just the symptoms.
Methods Of Chiropractic Care
Going to the chiropractor can be for a variety of reasons. While chiropractors typically focus on our backs, they are truly joint specialists that help to keep our bodies and joints in proper alignment. However, the effects of chiropractic care extend far beyond our joints.
Chiropractic adjustments have been used to help a diverse group of ailments that include back and neck pain, headaches,
sciatica, TMJ, sprains and strains and many more.
The issues that can bring you into our office are as diverse as the methods to care for them, but here we’ve compiled a list of five techniques used in our practice to treat our patients.
The diversified technique is likely to be used by your chiropractor if you are experiencing neck or back pain that is caused by a herniated lumbar disk. This is one of the most common methods used by chiropractors and offers almost instant relief for the patient. It is commonly associated with the popping or cracking of joints that allow for the release of the gases trapped in the joints which allows for reduced pressure on the joint and the nerves that pass through it.
Flexion-Distraction
Stretching the spine along the axis to help bring the spine back into alignment.
Flexion-distraction involves stretching the spine along the axis to help bring the spine back into alignment. Flexion-distraction involves stretching the spine along the axis to help bring the spine back into alignment. This technique helps to reduce pressure on the spine from a bulge or a disk herniation in the lumbar spine, increase spinal motion and reduces symptoms of sciatica. Typically, chiropractors will have a special table that is used just for this technique.
The Gonstead technique is considered one of the most popular adjustments and is used for the treatment of specific ailments in patients. Your chiropractor will do a spinal assessment on five separate criteria to detect issues with your spine. These five criteria include:
- Visualisation – This is a visual inspection of the spine that helps to immediately identify any areas of misalignment or changes to your posture that could indicate an issue.
- Instrumentation – The Nervoscope is a piece of equipment that is used to detect any changes in temperature that may indicate inflammation of tissues around the spine. The instrument is used by running it along your spinal column to detect any issues.
- Static Palpation – This assessment is used when you are not moving. Your chiropractor will palpate or press along your spine in order to identify swelling, misalignment, or discomfort that are indicative of underlying problems.
- Motion Palpation – Similar to static palpation, this involves your chiropractor feeling along your spine for issues. However, they will have you move and bend your spine at various angles to detect issues.
- X-Ray Analysis – X-rays are used as a visualization of the spine. This imaging helps to identify joint and disc irregularities and may be helpful in identifying or ruling out many pathologies.
The Chiropractic Activator Method is a specific technique within chiropractic care that uses a small, handheld device called an Activator to deliver gentle, controlled force to a specific area of the spine or joints.
Unlike traditional chiropractic adjustments that often involve manual manipulation and can produce a cracking sound, the Activator provides a precise, low-force adjustment without twisting or turning the body.
How the Activator Method Helps:
- Restores Joint Mobility: The gentle impulse from the Activator helps to realign joints that are misaligned or not moving properly, which can alleviate pain and improve function.
- Reduces Muscle Tension: By adjusting the spine or affected joint, the method can help to reduce muscle tension and spasms that contribute to discomfort and restricted movement.
- Promotes Nervous System Function: Chiropractic adjustments, including those done with the Activator, aim to relieve pressure on nerves that may be compressed due to misaligned vertebrae, which can enhance the body’s overall function.
- Pain Relief: The method is often used to treat conditions like back pain, neck pain, headaches, and joint pain by addressing the underlying musculoskeletal issues.
- Safe for Sensitive Patients: The Activator Method is ideal for patients who may have osteoporosis, arthritis, or other conditions where a more traditional manual adjustment may be too aggressive. It’s also used for children and the elderly due to its gentle approach.
What Does the Activator Do?
- Delivers a Quick Impulse: The Activator delivers a fast, measured impulse to the targeted area. Because it is quick, the body’s muscles are less likely to tense up in response, making the adjustment more effective.
- Targets Specific Areas: Chiropractors use the Activator to target very specific vertebrae or joints, improving precision and reducing the likelihood of over-adjustment.
Overall, the Activator Method helps improve joint mobility, reduce nerve interference, and alleviate pain through gentle, focused adjustments. It’s particularly beneficial for those who prefer or require a more gentle chiropractic approach.
Soft tissue therapy is the use of therapeutic massage that is targeted at the muscles and ligaments that are connected to the spine. This helps to allow the spine to shift back into a proper position or reduce the tension that is placed on the spine.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Chiropractic is one of the safest forms of neuromusculoskeletal treatments available. This treatment option is non-invasive in contrast with many surgeries or procedures. Chiropractic does not use medications and can actually reduce or eliminate a patient’s need for potentially addictive pain medications since modern prescriptions contain addictive substances and when abused can lead to permanent damage or death.
Chiropractors are required like medicine to complete an extensive core medical curriculum. Chiropractic students are also required to complete a 2 year clinical program prior to graduation. This extensive training helps to create one of the safest and most effective treatment options available for a variety of conditions.
Yes. In fact, chiropractic care is often very beneficial for children who are generally more active and therefore more prone to injury than any other age group. Their rapid growth also requires injuries to be addressed quickly in order to minimize any adverse effects on their development. Children are able to receive rapid care and feel back to normal more quickly than they would with most other treatment options. A Paediatric Chiropractor can treat a baby at birth.
While most chiropractors don’t require a referral and many medical aid plans allow you to call and schedule your appointment directly with a chiropractor, some medical aids do require a referral. If you have specific questions about this, it is important to call your medical aid provider prior to going to your first appointment. If you have any other questions or concerns, you can also contact your chiropractor for more information.
Doctors of Chiropractic must complete one of the most rigorous education schedules. Most students that are entering chiropractic colleges in the USA have already completed their bachelor’s degree in a medical field. Their education generally includes biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, and lab work. Upon entrance to chiropractic school, students must complete an additional five years of classes as well as study orthopaedics, human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, neurology, nutrition, medical imaging, and exercise courses among others.
This is in addition to the chiropractic courses where they learn the techniques and practice of spinal manipulation and other adjusting techniques.
At the completion of their class schedules, chiropractic students will have completed over 4,200 hours of classroom, clinical, and laboratory experience.
Most medical aids currently cover chiropractic care and other plans are adding it every year. If you are unsure of your coverage, call and discuss this with your medical aid provider today. We are contracted to the main Medical Aid providers in South Africa, kindly call our office
An adjustment of the spinal joints often allows for the release of gases that have built up in the spinal column. The popping sound is the pressure being released from the gas bubbles that were previously trapped in the joint. This sound is the same process as when somebody cracks their knuckles and there is often little or no discomfort associated with the sound or adjustment.
Many people have fears about having their neck and back adjusted or manipulated. While these fears are generally due to the perceived weakness of the neck and back from movies, Chiropractors are specially trained to perform these techniques safely and effectively. In fact, Chiropractic is safe for the elderly, infants, pregnant women, teens, and many other demographics.
Many medical aid companies consider Chiropractic care a covered procedure, meaning that you may only be responsible for a small copayment, or potentially no costs at all, to receive your chiropractic care.
